On April 15 — three weeks after half a million people gathered in downtown Los Angeles to protest a punitive immigration bill before Congress — thousands of students marched those same streets for the same cause.
Behind the student march was a core group of about 30 young people who founded the Coalition for United Students shortly after the massive demonstration on March 25.
The coalition – which includes middle, high school and college students as well as recent graduates – was created to give students a voice in the current immigration debate.

What would happen if immigrants vanished from the cityscape? Boycott organizers say more than you could imagine. They hope one day of personal sacrifice will go a long way in the Senate debate on immigration reform. But while businesses brace for the potential economic fallout, some immigrants dare to dream of a more positive outcome. Laura Cavanaugh reports.
The Los Angeles Times said Monday that 500,000 people turned out Saturday to the rally for immigrant rights in downtown Los Angeles and I was one of them.
As I and a fellow reporter arrived to cover the rally/march the excitement gave me a rush. I saw people marching and turning the corner onto Broadway and First streets. I heard chants, shouts, and cheers. (more…)

Since 9/11, the U.S. government has targeted American Muslim charities suspected of sponsoring terrorism abroad. Now, overall donations to these charities are down and Muslim groups say the unjustified scrutiny is intimidating donors who are obligated to give. Leo Juarez reports.
